Pigeon Netting vs Bird Spikes: Which Works for Your Building?

Netting stops birds entering a space; spikes stop birds landing on a surface; gel deters them from narrow ledges and signage. Most buildings need a mix.

The short answer

Use netting for balconies, light wells and plant areas where birds nest. Use spikes on ledges, parapets and AC units where they perch. Use gel on signage and architectural details where spikes would show.

Netting

Best for enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces. Done well it is near-invisible and lasts years; done badly it sags, tears and traps birds. On upper floors it should be installed from outside by rope access for a tight finish.

Spikes

Best for linear perches. Stainless or UV-stabilised polycarbonate, fixed with outdoor-rated adhesive. They need the surface cleaned and sanitised first, or birds return to the fouled area.

Gel

Best for narrow, visible ledges and signage. Needs periodic renewal in UAE heat.

Before you choose

Map where birds roost (night) versus perch (day), clean and sanitise fouled areas, and treat the whole elevation — treating one balcony often pushes birds to the next.
